Henry Wells and William G. Fargo founded Wells Fargo & Company in 1852 to provide banking and express services in California. Wells Fargo’s early tasks included transporting gold from the Philadelphia Mint and delivering mail and supplies. They also provided the primary loans to the Butterfield Overland Mail Company, which ran a 2,757-mile route through the Southwest to San Francisco. Wells Fargo’s presence expanded from California, the Oregon Territory, and New York to 11 states and territories by 1870. By 1918, Wells Fargo’s presence stretched from ocean to ocean.
